Wellness for me is stillness – the kind of stillness that occurs when you are utterly and completely absorbed in something you love, or are fascinated by, to the point where time stands still and external rewards, consequences, and expectations go out the window.

Faculty of Education Dean's Message

The practicum program in the Faculty of Education strives to provide a breadth of experiences (grade level as well as urban and rural settings) for all of our students, and this principle helps to ensure their readiness for their first teaching position, whatever it may bring.

Teacher Still Learning at 105-years-old

Alma McLachlan was always good at math. After graduating from high school in 1933 she became a book keeper, but even then her mind was set on other things. “I always wanted to be a teacher,” says the 105-year-old.

Designed to help ease the transition from student to teacher during Education 2500, PSI, PSII, and PSIII, the Teacher Mentors program has connected thousands of Faculty of Education students with dedicated and experienced teaching professionals.

Field experience gives students the opportunity to put theory into practice with the support and guidance of faculty members and teachers in the field. Students often develop collegial relationships that will benefit them throughout their careers.

The Field Experience office arranges practicum placements for student teachers each semester, placing ED2500, PSI, PSII, and PSIII students in various schools around southern Alberta, across Canada, and beyond, and connects each one of them with a teacher mentor to guide them on their journey.

Faculty of Education LEGACY (2008): Dr. Pamela Winsor, Belizean educators complete Master of Education degree with a focus on the development and teaching of literacy

For the first time, in coordination with the University of Belize, the Faculty of Education offered its master’s program to a cohort of international students. The program extension arose from Dr. Pamela Winsor’s long-standing affiliations with educators in Belize.

Faculty of Education LEGACY (2008): Art Loewen and Dr. Craig Loewen, together they have served the Faculty of Education for the entirety of its 40-year history – a true legacy of teaching and learning

n 1967, Art Loewen received a phone call from a former colleague, Dr. Russell Leskiw, then acting president of a new university in Lethbridge, with a request that would change Loewen’s life.

Born in Calgary, Andrew Doyle (BA/BEd '10, MEd '20) moved to Lethbridge while in junior high when his mom attended the Faculty of Education. Coming from a family of schoolteachers, including a great-aunt who is a past Alberta Teachers’ Association president, Doyle enrolled in 2007.

Faculty of Education LEGACY (2008): Drs. Art Aitken and George Bedard, master's degree prepares teaching professionals for positions of educational leadership within their communities

In 2004, the Faculty of Education rolled out the Educational Leadership MEd program accepting 22 carefully screened students. “We have some fairly tight criteria that require successful teacher background,” says Aitken. “It sets the tone for a successful program.”

The FNMI Master of Education Curriculum Leadership program is slated to begin in January 2009 and will be offered jointly by the Faculty of Education in collaboration with Mi’Kai’sto Red Crow Community College. It is one of a kind in Canada.
