Co-op gave Skylar Nikkel a solid foundation for the future

Skylar Nikkel (Sky) is a fifth-year applied statistics student with a minor in computer science and a geography concentration. Combining her enthusiasm for research and keenness for a challenge, Sky has completed three agriculture and research-related co-op work terms.

Professor Chee Meng Low is the director of the Wind Orchestra, and teaches applied saxophone study, conducting and musicianship skills courses. He is the co-founder of the annual U of L High School Honour Band: a collaboration with the South Western Alberta Teachers' Convention Association (SWATCA).

Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Arianna Kuhn

Dr. Arianna Kuhn joined the U of L in May of 2021 as a postdoctoral fellow of the Lee-Yaw lab in the Department of Biological Sciences. This summer she is excited to study the genetics of salamanders in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Hannah Scott (BSc '17, MSc '20) has been on board as uLethbridge Mitacs Business Development Specialist since April of this year. She works to build connections between academia and industry, assisting with every stage of the project development process, from matchmaking to grant writing.

HYRS - Kieran Schmidtke

While Kieran Schmidtke participated in the HYRS program, found a sense of belonging as a fellow lab member and researcher. During HYRS, Kieran used an analytical ultracentrifuge to study Adeno Associated viruses, used in gene therapy, in order to determine the purity of the tested samples.

HYRS - Joel Jansen

Through the HYRS program, Joel Jansen participated in cutting-edge research, met new friends and experienced meaningful collaboration to take with him into university. He learned how to use affinity chromatography and Microscale Thermophoresis among other interesting lab techniques.

Megan Hebert (BA/BMgt '16), professional development coordinator

Megan Hebert (BA/BMgt '16) is the new professional development coordinator for the Office of Graduate Studies at U of L. After working in post-secondary for almost five years, she joined uLethbridge in July. Megan is extremely passionate about experiential learning.

HYRS - Zaynab Enayetullah

Zaynab Enayetullah worked in the Department of Biological Sciences during her time in the HYRS program. She looked at genes controlling root elongation, research which enhanced her understanding of plant genetics.

Gold medal winner Dr. Katie Wilson (BSc Co-op '13, PhD '19) blends research with travel

At uLethbridge Dr. Katie Wilson (BSc Co-op '13, PhD '19) majored in biochemistry during her BSc and then went on to complete a PhD in computational chemistry. She won many awards including an NSERC Vanier Scholarship, which is one of the most prestigious PhD scholarships in Canada.

HYRS - Elisha Wong

During the HYRS program, Elisha Wong sparked her interest in neuroscience and Alzheimer's Disease. Throughout her time in the program, Elisha studied many aspects of Alzheimer's Disease including sex differences in the disease, and now the effects of certain drugs on the disease.

HYRS - Tabitha Gangur-Powell

Tabitha Gangur-Powell had a dynamic HYRS program experience. At the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, she spent time in immunology, trace analysis, soil biochemistry, and entomology labs.
