Q&A with Fall 2022 graduate Nicole Phillips

Scholarships helped ease financial stress, but also gave me confidence that hard work can pay off.

At ULethbridge, Nicole Phillips (BA '22) took the road less travelled and stumbled upon opportunities she never dreamed of. Nicole graduates this fall with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in a general major in the humanities with streams in English, history and fine arts.

What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at ULethbridge?

Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan, and that’s ok. We are led to believe that there is a clear road at the end, with each stop or roadblock obvious to us. It isn’t. Take “the road less travelled” as it will take you somewhere where you learn and grow. And you will stumble upon opportunities you never dreamed of.

Is there someone specific who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

My family. Having their support, guidance, and patience in dealing with long nights of school helped me get through my years of schooling. I went through a very difficult time, and they supported me the whole way through. I couldn’t have done it without them.

To continue to work with kids and give back to my community

What advice would you give to those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Don’t give up. Times get tough, and sometimes we don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s discouraging, to think you won’t figure out a concept for school or finish a paper. But as long as you keep pushing and put in the best effort you can, it can be done. It may not be perfect, but perfect isn’t the goal.
