Shining Student David Neufeld

David Neufeld has been fascinated by technology since a very young age, and studying computer science seemed an obvious choice. He chose the University of Lethbridge for its size and proximity to family. In the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science, he found a place of belonging and an incredible opportunity as a research assistant that has provided him with numerous opportunities to further his academic and professional development.

Since January 2023, I have been a research assistant under Drs. Daya Gaur, Robert Benkoczi, and Sajad Fathi Hafshejani from the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. In this role, I have been researching the use of quantum algorithms in calculating power flow. This experience has been both challenging and exciting, and it has provided me with numerous opportunities to further my academic and professional development.

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

My main reason for choosing ULethbridge had to do with its location. I wanted to ensure that I was close to my family. With most of my family living in southern Alberta, ULethbridge was an obvious choice. I also grew up in a town of about 7,000 people, so I was drawn to the fact that I could attend a university in an area that wasn’t quite as large as Calgary or Edmonton.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge? Has your academic plan changed since you began your studies?

I did know that I wanted to study computer science before coming to ULethbridge, as working with technology had been a passion of mine since a young age. So, my academic plan has not changed all that much, other than extending my degree by a single semester.

Please tell us a bit about your experiential or work-integrated learning.

This experience has been both challenging and exciting, and it has provided me with numerous opportunities to further my academic and professional development.

From this experience, I have taken away the following. First, it is important to step outside of your comfort zone to take part in new experiences. Next, you are never done learning a topic. Every time I thought I had a concept nailed down, I realized that there was another aspect which I had not considered. Finally, don’t sell yourself short. I almost didn’t apply for this role because I wasn’t sure I would be capable. However, now I realize that everything has a learning curve, but when you push through, you can succeed.

David is an exceptional and diligent student, which has proven to be an asset in his university journey. Nevertheless, his success cannot be solely attributed to his intelligence and work ethic. David also possesses remarkable communication abilities and excellent organizational skills, both of which I have personally witnessed in our classes and meetings. Is there anyone else who has had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

My fiancée, Claire, has had a significant impact on my experience at ULethbridge. Attending university with my partner has been such a great experience. Throughout my time here, she has consistently pushed me to do my best and take on new experiences. I owe much of my success to her.

Have you received any scholarships and awards?

I have received numerous scholarships and awards through both the University and the provincial government, including the New Beginnings Bursary, the Louise McKinney Scholarship, and the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. These have aided me greatly in pursuing my education without too much financial hardship or stress. To all of the donors who contributed to the scholarships I have received, I would like to give a big thank you for investing in my education and success!

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to enter the workforce as a software developer.

What advice would you like to give those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

For those about to begin at ULethbridge, I would recommend learning to budget your time wisely. Each class typically meets two or three times a week for a total of about two and a half hours. This means that you need to utilize your time outside of class to understand the material and work on your assignments/projects. I began to have a much easier time completing the work for my courses when I started making weekly to-do lists that allowed me to see what I needed to accomplish to stay on top of my course load.
