Why did you choose to pursue fine arts at ULethbridge?
I chose to pursue fine arts at the University of Lethbridge after learning about it through some colleagues from my high school choir. Furthermore, my deep admiration for my high school choir teacher, Heidi Wood (BEd/BMus '01), who is an alumna of this university, solidified my decision. Additionally, the exceptional quality of the Music Department here at ULethbridge played a significant role in my choice.
What inspires your artistic/musical practice?
Growing up with my Filipino heritage deeply influences my artistic and musical journey as a vocalist. It adds a special cultural flavour, emotion and strength to my work. Discovering classical music in the Philippines during university was eye-opening, and seeing thriving Filipino artists in this genre motivated me. I aspire to follow in their footsteps and inspire future generations of young Filipino musicians.
Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge? Has your academic plan changed since you began your studies?
Before arriving at ULethbridge, I was set on studying nursing. However, before even returning to school, I developed a profound love for singing. This newfound passion has led me to reconsider my academic path and now I can't envision pursuing anything other than music.
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?
My most memorable experience at ULethbridge has been portraying Jesus in the fine arts production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The collaboration between the music and drama departments was incredible and I've grown immensely as an artist. To Doug, Bente, my fellow JCS cast members and the production team, I will forever cherish this experience in my heart.
How have your professors or instructors impacted your education?
My music professors and instructors have profoundly impacted my education. Their guidance, expertise and encouragement have been invaluable in shaping my academic journey. They have challenged me to think critically, pushed me to excel and supported me every step of the way.
If you had asked me 5 years ago if I wanted to be a singer, there's no way I would have imagined it. But I am immensely grateful for all the professors who have supported me throughout my music journey. To Dr. Sandra Stringer, thank you for not only teaching me how to sing (lol) but also for your unwavering guidance and encouragement. I am truly blessed to have such an amazing voice professor.
Have you received any scholarships or awards? How have they impacted your education?
Yes, I have been fortunate to receive several scholarships throughout my music degree. Last year, I had the privilege of attending a summer opera program in New Brunswick. These scholarships have had a significant impact on my education by alleviating financial burdens and providing opportunities for further artistic growth and development.
Tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning opportunities at ULethbridge and how these have enhanced your education?
While I didn't have the opportunity for experiential or work-integrated learning specifically at ULethbridge, I did have significant educational experiences attending an opera summer program in New Brunswick and an emerging choral artist program in Vancouver.
What are your hopes/plans for the future?
My hopes and plans for the future involve pursuing a master's degree to further deepen my knowledge and skills in music. Beyond that, I aspire to continue performing and sharing my passion for music with audiences around the world. I envision a career that allows me to explore diverse musical genres, collaborate with other artists and make meaningful contributions to the music community.
What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
The advice I'd offer to future students, particularly those contemplating returning to university as mature students stems from my own experience: If you hold a dream close to your heart, know that it's never too late to chase it. Believe in yourself, remain dedicated to your aspirations and never underestimate the profound impact your dreams can have.
