A lifelong musician and aspiring educator, Bree Bos (BMus/BEd ’26) brought together both passions through the University of Lethbridge’s combined degrees option. Her ULethbridge experience was shaped by collaboration, growth and a willingness to engage with the challenges and opportunities of her undergraduate studies.

For her outstanding academic achievements, Bos was awarded the Faculty of Education Gold Medal at Spring 2026 Convocation. From navigating complex classroom discussions to building confidence through her professional semesters, she approached her degree with curiosity and commitment. She graduates with a strong foundation in both music and education, and a clear sense of purpose as she steps enters her next chapter.

Describe your ULethbridge experience in three words.

Stretching, collaborative, FUN.

It was stretching in that I learned so much more than classroom content during my degree. Most notably, how to interact and communicate well in an environment where my opinions were often in the minority. Although these can be challenging spaces, I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn how to have more constructive conversations with a class or group that holds a different opinion than I do. As a music major, collaboration was a huge part of school both in and out of classes, musically and academically. The collaboration that I experienced in my music degree informed my collaboration with peers in education classrooms. How could going to school, learning, and doing what I love (music and teaching) not be fun? Not necessarily all of the time, but overall I had a blast during my time at ULethbridge!

What drew you to your program or field of study?

I’ve been a musician since I was 4 years old, and often dreamed of becoming a teacher. I was homeschooled growing up, and my mom inspired me to teach others with the same enthusiasm and care as she taught me and my siblings. When I understood the impact that a teacher can have on a students life, it was hard not to go into the profession in the hopes that I can positively impact my family and other students in the same way!

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

My three professional semesters! Both in the university classrooms and teaching in schools. I worked with some outstanding teachers and had two of the most amazing people as professors that inspired me and were encouraging throughout my degree. Dr. Chris Mattatall is my biggest role model from the University. He cares for and loves his students in such a beautiful way, and has a unique but incredibly effective way of teaching his classes. I have implemented many of his teaching strategies in my practicums. Dr. Lloyd McArton was the most supportive professor I’ve had. Not only did he advocate for me on numerous occasions, but he is a kind and intentional teacher. These two professors drastically impacted my time at ULethbridge, as well as my practicum experiences. Their classes are the ones I’ll never forget!

What does this academic recognition mean to you?

This award is something that I never dreamed I would receive. Growing up homeschooled and then finishing high school in a non-traditional time-frame, I have never had the opportunity to have this type of recognition for my academics. In a way, it is a reminder that hard work is never wasted. I said at the beginning of my degree that I would graduate with a 4.0 — not knowing what that would mean along the way — and yet, here we are! Alongside every other graduate, I put countless hours and physical and emotional energy into my degrees, and winning this award makes this such a sweet ending to this season. I am most excited to be able to point to my parents and say that they made me who I am today, and this award is a testament to their constant support, help, and encouragement. The Faculty of Education is full of some of the smartest and most intentional people I know. I am beyond honoured to have been selected for this award.

What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at ULethbridge?

I often was in the minority with some of my opinions. I had some challenging classes and professors that pushed me to stand up for what I believe rather than sit by while my view point was being openly challenged.

What are your plans for the future?

In the near future I am hoping to sub and teach. My husband and I are looking forward to starting a family and homeschooling our kids! I plan to continue to teach private music lessons, lead and teach youth at our church, and start a small homeschooling community with friends and family in the area!

What advice would you give to those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge? What would you tell your first-year self?

The University of Lethbridge has so many opportunities and spaces for students to learn and grow! It took me a couple years to realize the extent and value of these resources, so take advantage of them while you can! My favourite space to learn new skills and get creative was the innovation zone. On top of this, get plugged into a couple clubs that really interest you. The community and support you can find from some of these clubs is so valuable to your time in school. I was a part of InterVarsity for the majority of my time at ULethbridge!
