Carl Day began his studies at the University of Lethbridge in 2021, initially planning to pursue a career in accounting. However, after some guidance from his father, Carl made the switch to science, choosing chemistry as his field of study — he’s not a fan of microscopes! The close proximity of ULethbridge to home and its strong science-focused programs were key factors in his decision to attend.
Focus on your studies and try to get good grades.
Meet Carl | Learner. Finisher. Succinct.
Program: Bachelor of Science | Major: Chemistry
The opportunity to thoroughly engage with coursework and hands-on research has been one of the highlights of Carl’s time at ULethbridge. In particular, his independent study on simulating fluorescence for nucleic acid probes has provided a unique blend of theory and practical experience. This project, which includes mastering command-line interfaces, remote clusters, and computer coding, has not only sharpened his technical skills but also ignited a passion for applying science in creative and innovative ways.
Professors at ULethbridge have had a lasting influence on Carl’s educational experience. Through their guidance, he has developed a deeper understanding of complex scientific topics and honed his ability to communicate effectively, "I feel I have been equipped with better language to express serious issues in the world, while also knowing that there is much more to learn."
Carl is an incredible student. For calculation questions on exams, rather than simply regurgitating the method I showed in class, he would do them in a different way to get the correct answer. This shows that he truly understood the material and didn't just memorize it. — Wayne Lippa, Instructor in Chemistry & Biochemistry
In addition to his academic work, Carl has received several scholarships, including the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, the Jason Lang Scholarship, the University of Lethbridge Scholarship, and the Mr. Merv Leitch Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry. These awards have eased his financial burden, allowing him to focus more on his studies.
As Carl works toward graduating in 2025, he is focused on the opportunities ahead. His goals are straightforward: to build a stable life and avoid financial hardship. His time at ULethbridge demonstrates a strong commitment to academic achievement, the pursuit of knowledge, and the development of skills that will serve him well in the years to come.
Quick Answers
Favourite class?: Analytical Chemistry II. It mainly comprised of using math formulas, had a lot of practice available, and the lab was simple.
Favourite social activity at ULethbridge?: The poster sale if that counts. Anytime they give out free food.
Favourite place to study?: In UHall Block B on the seventh floor, there is a spot with comfortable seats with swivelling desks attached to the armrests. This is a more comfortable place to work. There should just be more seats and desks around campus in general.
About Shining Students
Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.
Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Carl!
