Ash Mosabeb-Omran’s journey at ULethbridge exemplifies the power of discovery and growth. From exploring freshwater ecosystems to leading groundbreaking synthetic biology research as the iGEM wet lab lead, Ash has embraced every opportunity to learn, connect, and innovate. Inspired by supportive mentors and driven by a passion for science, he’s paving the way toward a future as a professor and researcher.
I am currently the iGEM wet-lab lead, and being part of the team has made life busy at times, but the advantages of being part of the team are huge. Finding a local issue and trying to fix it with synthetic biology is very rewarding.
Meet Ash | Curious. Determined. Ambitious.
Program: Bachelor of Science | Major: Biological Sciences
Why did you choose ULethbridge?
I chose this university due to the new science building and the small class sizes.
Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?
I initially strived to become a limnologist and study freshwater ecosystems, but after joining iGEM and becoming an active member, I changed my mind and learned I wanted to do research with proteins.
Please tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning at ULethbridge.
My 3 biggest takeaways from doing research are:
1. The world of research is vast, and even with its vastness, there is still a lot to learn, which is very interesting and makes me want to try and help discover more.
2. I found that I enjoy being in the lab and piloting my research towards a goal.
3. Other fields of STEM can be intriguing, and each field ties into another.
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?
Going to Paris and representing ULethbridge for the iGEM team and learning of all of the ways synthetic biology can be used.
How have your professors impacted your education?
Dr. Trushar Patel has supported me throughout my time in the lab. From being welcoming and supportive when I first joined to giving excellent advice and guiding my future. He has helped me realize my passion for research and completely changed my future academic career trajectory.
Dr. Theresa Burg’s lab is the first one I joined, where I learned how labs function and gained some important skills that I still use. Her initial support and guidance have been a blessing and allowed me to expand my skills to confirm I wanted to do research work.
Ash is a person who easily connects with everyone and helps them by whatever means possible. He is a very generous individual. — Dr. Trushar Patel, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Is there anyone else who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?
I have had two role models during my time here. The first was Zachary Robinson, who took me under his wing and guided me with everything academic-related. From helping me in the lab to showing me how to get better results to showing me good spots to study. He has helped me with just about everything and has helped me realize what I want to be in the future.
The second role model I've had was Baillie Cej, who was the Bio Club president; while working, she encouraged and helped me apply for independent studies as well as join the iGEM team. She was the catalyst for everything I've accomplished during my time here.
Have you received any scholarships and awards?
The scholarships and awards that I've won have helped alleviate the cost of living and tuition, as well as help my CV become stronger for graduate school applications.
Are you participating in any extracurricular activities?
I am currently the iGEM wet-lab lead, and being part of the team has made life busy at times, but the advantages of being part of the team are huge. Finding a local issue and trying to fix it with synthetic biology is very rewarding.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy reading books, drawing, gaming, and spending time with my friends in my free time.
What are three awesome things about you?
I had a pet lobster named Ryan during my first year. I enjoy creating things, whether it’s clothing, tables, or anything that can be built or made. I also love baking and can tackle difficult recipes.
What are your hopes/plans for the future?
After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to pursue a Master's or PhD with the ultimate goal of becoming a professor.
What advice would you like to give those about beginning their journey at ULethbridge?
If you're considering doing lab work in the future, try an independent study to see if it's something you'd enjoy. Also, joining clubs like the Biology Club or the iGEM team can help you meet like-minded people and explore your interests further.

About Shining Students
Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.
Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Ash!
