Amber Kramer knew as soon as she decided that she wanted to go back to school that she wanted to take the Addictions Counselling program. She hopes to continue on to the Masters of Counselling program here at ULethbridge and eventually open up her own private practice.

I have always loved helping people. I had a 15 year career as a Registered Massage Therapist before deciding to go back to school. I realized my favorite part of that job was the connections and the impact I had with my clients, so naturally I wanted to focus on those aspects - counselling seemed like a natural fit.

Program: Bachelor of Health Science in Addictions Counselling

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

I had a friend in the Addictions Counselling program, and I found her classes very interesting and aligned with what I'd want to learn. I loved how much hands-on counselling the program offered. I then went to speak with a guidance counselor at the University, who was incredibly supportive and positive in my decision to enroll.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

Yes I did, and I have always loved helping people. I had a 15 year career as a Registered Massage Therapist before deciding to go back to school. I realized my favorite part of that job was the connections and the impact I had with my clients, so naturally I wanted to focus on those aspects - counselling seemed like a natural fit.

How have your professors impacted your education?

All of my professors in this program have allowed me to truly open up, learn and be who I am, and support me through my time here. I feel so honored to have learned from such great humans, who have impacted my education and life more than they realize.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

Going through my classes gave me the opportunity to not only learn necessary skills, but also to go inwards and grow as a student and individual. Many things about my life have changed for the better, having gone through this program. I've also met some of my closest friends here.

In your free time, what do you like to do?

I read profusely, play video games, enjoy running, and I enjoy hanging out with my partner and our cats. 😊

What are your hopes and plans for the future?

I'm hoping to get into the Counselling Psychology master's program also at ULethbridge, and in the future have my own private practice in which I can combine my skills with massage/body work with psychotherapy to impact clients in a meaningful and helpful way. My passion lies in working with youth, those wanting to heal from trauma, and individuals struggling with eating disorders.

What advice would you like to give those about beginning their journey at ULethbridge?

It's absolutely never too late to go back to school.

Put your heart into your education.
