Shining Education Graduate Andrew Denton
A dedicated outdoorsman and math teacher, Andrew Denton (BSc/BEd '24) believes that if you can't place yourself in an engaging learning environment, you must create one yourself. As he prepares to take the next step in his journey as an educator, Andrew looks to continue demonstrating the relevance of mathematics in our everyday lives and encourage his students to explore new heights in both academics and personal development.
Through my teaching, I hope to inspire a greater interest in learning math, improve students' confidence in their abilities and equip them with the critical thinking skills they need for future success. I aim to help students not only understand the content but also develop a growth mindset that empowers them in all areas of learning.

Hike, fish and be outside!
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?
I don’t know if I could choose just one experience, but what stands out to me most at ULethbridge is the relationships that shaped every memorable moment. Whether it was the supportive community within the Faculty of Education or the friendships I made outside of it, these connections made every experience meaningful. In the Faculty of Education, I felt surrounded by people who shared the same passion for teaching and learning, which pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. Beyond academics, the friendships I formed across different programs and activities enriched my time at the University of Lethbridge, providing a strong sense of belonging and balance. These relationships made the challenging times more manageable and the successes all the more fulfilling. Looking back, it’s the people I met and the lasting connections that have truly defined my ULethbridge experience.
Is there someone specific who had an important influence on your uLethbridge experience?
My friend Spencer was a huge part of my ULethbridge experience. He was with me through all of it, both the good and the bad, and made the whole journey more enjoyable. We had so many great times together that turned what could have been a stressful period into something fun and memorable. Looking back, it’s the friendship we shared and the laughter along the way that really stood out, and I know my experience wouldn’t have been the same without him.
What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at ULethbridge?
The most important lesson I learned during my time at ULethbridge, particularly within the Faculty of Education, is the importance of having a growth mindset. The Faculty of Education emphasized the idea that learning is a continuous process and that challenges and setbacks are opportunities for growth rather than roadblocks. This perspective has shaped how I approach both my personal development and my teaching, encouraging me to embrace challenges, stay open to feedback and continually strive to improve. Adopting a growth mindset has been key to my success and is something I’ll carry forward throughout my career.
What advice would you like to give those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
Take the time to build connections with the people around you, whether they’re in your program or not. Those relationships will shape your experience in ways you might not expect, and having a solid support system can make all the difference. Also, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone — try new things, join clubs or explore different courses.
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
My main goal is to pursue a career in teaching, with a focus on math. I am, however, open to whatever opportunities the future may bring, whether that means expanding my teaching into other subjects, taking on new challenges in education or exploring different avenues that align with my skills and interests. I’m excited to see where this path leads.
