Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up near the small village of Wakefield, Quebec — which is about 30 minutes north of Ottawa. After high school, I first went into nursing but realized that profession was not for me. So, I switched gears and did a BA in history from the University of Ottawa before doing a Library and Information Technician diploma from Algonquin College. I worked contracts in various government departments such as the Surveyor General, Justice, and the Supreme Court of Canada before landing a full-time position at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario. After a year and a half there, I took a gamble on a job posting I saw for ULethbridge and moved west.
How long have you been at ULethbridge and what do you do here?
I’ve been at ULethbridge for 12 years now. I work in the technical services department in the library. I am one of the system administrators for the new library system and was part of the implementation team. My work also focuses on library acquisitions along with cataloging and metadata management. You’ll also see me at the library services desk.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part is helping students. Showing them how to find what they need and watching them learn and grow while they are here. Researching, literacy and critical thinking skills are crucial these days with so much mis and disinformation out there. It may be silly, but I also enjoy the metadata work, ensuring that items are discoverable for our library users. I think that work is important because the better the data is, the easier it is to find things.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy going for walks in the coulees. I also do a weekly volunteering shift with the Last Chance Cat Ranch along with helping at their monthly craft and bake sales.
