Shining Fine Arts Graduate I'tsstsimanaki (Fussy Girl) Savannah Delaney-Wolf Child

Faculty of Fine Arts graduate I'tsstsimanaki (Fussy Girl) Savannah Delaney-Wolf Child (BFA - Indigenous Art '24) found her passion in art history and museum studies as a result of her professors, who later become her mentors. As she prepares for the future, Savannah reflects on her favourite memories during her time at ULethbridge.

There was a time when I faced problems that made me want to give up and quit, but I received support that changed everything for me, which gave me the strength to switch over my degree into something that fit me for the better.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

One of the most memorable experiences at the University was very recent. This past summer, I was one of the lucky few to take part in a study tour with the IGBM 3592/ INDG 3592 class with the instructors Rob Crow and Andrea Amelinckx that brought myself and few other Indigenous students to learn about the culture of the Maori people in New Zealand. Going on this study tour opened my eyes to learn about other Indigenous cultures from the other side of the world, sharing experiences and learning what it means to be Maori. This class is something that I will always remember when I think about my University memories.

What is the most important lesson you learned during your time at ULethbridge?

I learned to be honest with myself about what I wanted to do with my degree. I learned to work through my grief as I was faced with it more then once during my time at University. There was a time when I faced problems that made me want to give up and quit, but I received support that changed everything for me, which gave me the strength to switch over my degree into something that fit me for the better. Another lesson is to also have the trust that everything happens for a reason and things will always change as they go on.

Is there someone specific who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

Yes, Dr. Devon Smither. I met Devon in my first Art History class, when I was originally studying Indigenous Art Studio. After working with Devon in a few more classes, I switched my degree over to Indigenous Art History/Museum Studies, after figuring out that I loved studying art more then making it.

Another person that I would really like to thank is Dr. Anne Dymond. I met Anne way later in my University experience, but in the short time I've known Anne, she has opened doors for me by giving me opportunities to expand my experiences and skills. I am very grateful for her, as she has played a part in helping me get the job that I have today, that I very much love.

Because of my two professors, I was awarded the Indigenous AHMS award, and I will be forever grateful to have professors like them.

Did you receive scholarships and awards? How did they help you throughout your studies?

I was awarded the Indigenous Art History/Museum Studies Award.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

My future plans involve continuing to develop my skills and gain more experience in my current field. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow, and I am open to new challenges and responsibilities. By finishing my time at the University I will have the groundwork to always look forward in doing the things that I love.

What advice would you like to give those beginning their journey at ULethbridge?

Don't be afraid to try new things, and take part in every opportunity the University has to offer. Take that class that sounds interesting, because you many never know that you might want to pursue it further.
