Meet Dohouk: Inspiring, Passionate, Intelligent, Kind.
Program: Bachelor of Education (After Degree)

What excites me most about becoming a teacher is the opportunity to work with students of all ages in a multicultural classroom within a diverse country. Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge — it’s also about learning from my students and gaining insight into different cultures and perspectives. The idea that I can inspire students, make a lasting impact and be someone they remember motivates me to work even harder and give my best every day.

What is a unique thing/fact about yourself?

I was awarded the Youth Immigrant Award in 2017 for being the first Syrian youth to graduate from high school in Lethbridge. This achievement inspired me to become the first Syrian immigrant to graduate from the University of Lethbridge with a chemistry degree in 2023. I always remind myself, "I am Douhouk, and I can do it". My friends tell me that whenever they face something difficult, thinking of me motivates them and gives them the confidence to overcome any challenge.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

My education journey has been unique, special and challenging. However, I have been fortunate to have had many teachers who supported me in overcoming these challenges. Now, it is my turn to give back by supporting as many students as possible and helping them overcome their own obstacles. I am committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming classroom environment where every student feels valued, supported and capable of success. No matter their background or challenges, I want students to know they belong, their voices matter and they have the potential to achieve great things.

I also want to show every immigrant student that it is not impossible to reach their dreams and become anything they want to be if they have the right support and enough resources. By fostering a classroom culture of respect, encouragement and empowerment, I hope to inspire students to believe in themselves and their abilities.

Why did you choose to pursue Education at the University of Lethbridge?

The University of Lethbridge is well known for its education program and has an incredible reputation, not just in the province but across Canada as well.

Tell us about any learning experiences out in the field and how they have impacted your education.

During my PS I, PS II and PS III practicums, I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of teachers, principals and vice-principals who were incredibly supportive and generous with their mentorship. Their ongoing feedback was invaluable, offering practical insights that helped me grow significantly as an educator. Through their guidance, I learned not only effective instructional strategies but also essential skills in classroom management and fostering inclusive learning environments.

This collaborative mentorship encouraged me to experiment with diverse teaching approaches and adapt my lessons to meet the varied needs of students. The hands-on experiences across these practicums reinforced my passion for teaching and deepened my understanding of how to create meaningful, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences for all students.

How have your professors or instructors impacted your education? Are there any faculty members who have made a big impact on your time at ULethbridge?

Dr. Doug Checkley had a profound impact on my philosophy of education. He taught me that before we are teachers or professionals, we must first be human. His approach inspired me to be authentic and to connect with not only my students but with everyone from the heart. He emphasized that this profession requires us to wear our hearts on our sleeves, and if we are unable to do so, we should reconsider our path. His perspective reinforced the idea that teachers influence every student, whether we realize it or not. Dr. Charlotte Brenner also had a significant impact on me, especially through our conversations about the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and autonomy in the classroom. Her insights helped me understand how to create an inclusive learning environment, which was invaluable during my PS I experience. Additionally, Dr. Robin Bright, my University Consultant during PS I, provided valuable and insightful feedback that greatly contributed to my success in my practicum. Her guidance helped me refine my teaching practices and grow as an educator.
