At ULethbridge, Justin Patrick found a way to bring together his love for computer science and French, diving into every opportunity to grow in both fields. Whether it was working with the telecom team, having meaningful conversations with professors, or leading as a student club treasurer, Justin made the most of every experience. His time here shaped him into a dynamic thinker ready to make waves in technology, languages, and public service.

I am the first in my immediate family to attend university. It has been a transformative experience and has greatly shaped who I am today. While my rural roots may have been a small barrier, I don't believe it to be an obstacle. I am proud of my roots, and I am proud of how far I've come in so short a time.

Meet Justin | Artist. Developer. Learner.
Program: Bachelor of Art & Science | Major: French and Computer Science

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

ULethbridge was close to home, yet far enough away to seem the next natural step!

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

I wanted to start university immediately after graduating high school, and computer science seemed like the best fit. Throughout my first year, however, I realized French was as great an academic interest to me as computer science.

Please tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning at ULethbridge.

I was very lucky to work on campus with the telecom team under the direction of Jeff Oliver just a few months before he retired. He and his team were incredibly supportive of my curiosity. They always addressed any questions I had, no matter how small. It was a great pleasure to work with them.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

The many times I stayed after class chatting with my professors. It was always an amazing experience to talk about our shared passion regarding the course content and my current academic and professional developments. My professors were my greatest mentors during my first two years in university!

How have your professors impacted your education?

The entire French faculty has convinced me that if the worst ever comes to pass and I cannot land a job in the IT field, I would probably be more than happy as a French studies professor! I must mention by name professors Tabitha Spagnolo and Steve Urquhart; I have spent hours talking to these two amazing professors regarding everything from my job applications to Jungian archetypes in French literature and everything in between!

Justin Patrick is an exceptional student who embodies the very best of what the University of Lethbridge has to offer. He excels in his chosen major field of computer science while he embraces the fundamental importance of the humanities, with particular emphasis on French cultural studies and language. As he embarks on a new and exciting chapter as one of a select few representatives from Alberta to the Senate Page Program 2024/2025, I wish him every success and can't wait to see what great things lie ahead for him. – Dr. Tabitha Spagnolo, Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics

Is there anyone else who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

My academic advisor, Sarah Gardner, helped me at every turn as I tried to reconcile my deep interest in both computer science and French. She also supported my decision to transfer to the University of Ottawa for the remainder of my degree to pursue further professional development as I work at the Senate of Canada.

Have you received any scholarships and awards?

I was very fortunate to receive at least one award each semester. This lightened my financial strains significantly, especially during my second year when I lived in residence. I am eternally grateful for all of the support throughout my time at ULethbridge. The support has brought me to where I am today.

Are you participating in any extracurricular activities?

Between 2022 and 2024, I was the treasurer of the re-founded French Club. In this role I coordinated with the French Language Centre for funding for the club. This allowed me to collaborate and network with members of the French Language Centre outside of my regular academic pursuits.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy making music, playing violin, and programming. Furthermore, I am interested in politics and current events — and languages!

What are three awesome things about you?

  1. Currently learning Ukrainian
  2. I played my first live Concertino this year at Casa
  3. I have developed software projects with a combined 1M+ downloads!

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

I am looking forward to continuing my work as a Senate Page in 2025 and see where the opportunity leads me. I am currently considering law school following my undergraduate degree.

What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Be involved and passionate in your studies! Attend class, engage with the professors, and try your hardest. Join a club (or start one)!  Your time at university is what you make of it, so make the very best of it!

Is there anything else you want to share with us about your decision to pursue a university degree?

I am the first in my immediate family to attend university. It has been a transformative experience and has greatly shaped who I am today. While my rural roots may have been a small barrier, I don't believe them to be an obstacle. I am proud of my roots, and I am proud of how far I've come in so short a time.

About Shining Students

Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.

Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Justin!
