Karleen Burns | Bachelor of Health Sciences - Addictions Counselling | Class of 2022
Karleen Burns (BHSc '22) shared some of her most memorable experiences and lessons she learned throughout her Bachelor of Health Sciences program at ULethbridge.
Tell us about your Addictions Counselling internship experience.
My internship at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI) was my most memorable experience, along with the seminar group that brought me through my internship experience. I made many new connections through this experience and gained first-hand knowledge that made me a better counsellor.
I took away confidence in my abilities as a counsellor through working with my own caseload of clients and having the freedom to develop my style as a counsellor.
I also took away a newfound love for working in a school, they are great places to meet teens where they are at. Many relationships that I made with the youth allowed them to engage further and more deeply in other parts of their life. Finally, I took away many new connections, which have aided me in my career already.
What do you think the most important lesson you learned during your time at ULethbridge was?
It's good to trust your instincts and be confident in your decision-making, but don't let that stop you from asking questions and staying curious. Every opportunity can lead to new learning.
Is there any advice you would give those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
It's important to make positive connections with your peers and your instructors, they are the ones who will make your education memorable.
Congratulations, Karleen!
