Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in southern Ontario, where my journey into international education began during high school through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Spending a year at a high school in Kanazawa, Japan, ignited my curiosity about languages and cross-cultural learning. I went on to attend Carleton University in Ottawa, earning a BA in Linguistics, a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and a Master of Arts in Applied Language Studies. After several years teaching English for academic purposes at Carleton University and Portland State University, I transitioned into roles focused on test research, development and management. In these positions, I worked to improve large-scale and high-stakes assessment and evaluation practices across Canada, the United States and internationally. To further develop my expertise, I earned a Doctor of Education in International Education Leadership and Policy from the University of Toronto, where my research focused on micro-credentials and continuing education opportunities for adult learners, including Canadian newcomers, in colleges and universities.

I joined ULethbridge as the Manager of the English Language Institute because of its strong focus on student success, language learning, and fostering a globally connected campus. This role allows me to combine my expertise in language education, program development and international collaboration to help students achieve their academic and professional goals. I was particularly drawn to International’s role as a hub for cross-cultural learning and international student support at ULethbridge. Every day I get to work closely with motivated students, dedicated language teachers and enthusiastic colleagues who share my passion for international education. Supporting students as they navigate their academic journeys and connecting ULethbridge with the world is deeply rewarding.

How long have you been at ULethbridge and what do you do here?

I started working at ULethbridge in June 2020 as the Manager of the English Language Institute. In this role, I oversee the English for Academic Purposes program, short-term language and culture programs, and several of International’s student volunteer initiatives. My primary responsibility is to ensure that the programs offered through the English Language Institute provide students with an inspiring and supportive environment that promotes their language, academic and personal growth. I work closely with language teachers to enhance the delivery of our programs and address students’ learning needs. Additionally, I collaborate with other units and departments to design engaging activities and experiences that help students integrate into the university and broader community. Since the English Language Institute operates as a cost-recovery unit, part of my role is managing resources responsibly to maintain program quality while ensuring financial sustainability. I also collaborate with other newcomer-serving groups throughout Lethbridge and Alberta. My goal is to create a holistic learning experience that not only supports language development but also fosters a sense of belonging and global engagement for students and volunteers.

What's the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is seeing students grow and succeed. Whether it is watching them gain the confidence to deliver an academic presentation in English, immersing themselves in local experiences like Whoop-Up Days or celebrating their transition to undergraduate studies, it is incredibly rewarding to support their journeys. I also deeply value working alongside a talented and diverse team of language teachers and staff who are committed to creating learning opportunities and creating a globally connected campus community.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I treasure quiet moments with a good novel and a cup of coffee —though with three young kids at home, those moments are rare! I’m a long-time volunteer with Scouts Canada, and all three of my children are involved in a local group, which keeps me busy with outdoor adventures, community projects and fun scouting activities (ask me about my Cub Car). I also love exploring new places, trying different cuisines and creating memories through travel.
