Dr. Gideon Fujiwara, Associate Professor in History, Asian Studies Coordinator
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in southern Alberta and Vancouver. I received my BA in a History-English Literature double major at UBC, then earned my MA in Japanese Intellectual History at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. I returned to UBC to get my PhD in Asian Studies, with focus on Japanese History. Before settling in Lethbridge, I had also lived in Sendai, Hirosaki, Tokyo, and across Israel. My previous jobs include tour bus driver, bank teller, and English teacher.
How long have you been at ULethbridge and what do you do here?
Lethbridge became our home 11 years ago this summer. I teach courses on the histories of the world, East Asia, Japan, China, Nationalism, and Modernity, as well as Asian Studies.
What's the best part of your job?
I especially like lively discussions with students on history, reading handwritten documents from 19th-century Japan, and conversations with colleagues over coffee.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy walks with my family and Clover, our Havanese puppy, and playing ice hockey, especially on the frozen pond.
