Faculty of Education Gold Medal winner: Toshi Uyesugi

Each year, the faculties of Education, Fine Arts and Health Sciences and the Dhillon School of Business award a gold medal to the most distinguished graduate for the academic year at the undergraduate level. This year's Gold Medal winner for the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge is Toshi Uyesugi (BEd '24).

Toshi's excellence in her program stems beyond her perfect 4.0 in both mathematics and education. During her PS III internship at St. Mary's School in Taber, she fostered an encouraging and safe learning environment for students in her Math 20 and middle school science classes. A true advocate for welcoming personal change through venturing outside the comfort zone, Toshi will look to embody this principle as she pursues a master's degree.

What does this academic recognition mean to you?

I am grateful to be recognized for the effort I have put into my studies. I was fortunate to learn from many incredible educators, mentors and peers throughout my degree. I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained to my career as a teacher.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

My primary goal is to become a high school math or science teacher. I hope to create an environment where students feel confident in themselves and willing to explore STEM concepts. In addition to teaching, I plan to further my education by pursuing a master's degree in science or education.

What advice would you give to those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

My advice to students about to begin their journey at ULethbridge is to explore classes that interest them and to stretch beyond their comfort zones. You may discover a passion for something you didn't initially consider.
