Meet Valerie | Passionate. Humorous. Considerate.
Program: Bachelor of Science | Major: Psychology
Why did you choose ULethbridge?
It made the most sense in terms of location, but I heard great things about the programs and what the University of Lethbridge had to offer. I was interested in ULethbridge because the psychology courses and professors areas of study piqued my interest.
Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?
Yes. I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in psychology based on what I was interested in in high school and what I saw myself doing in the future. My academic plan has not changed since I began my studies because the BSc in psychology has allowed me to explore a lot of different disciplines.
Please tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning at ULethbridge.
I participated in an independent study with psychology professor Dr. Jamal Mansour in the Summer 2024 term. This involved reading and learning related articles to the field of eyewitness and forensic psychology that I had not seen before. Along with this, I helped develop the protocol for a study and became familiar with the program Qualtrics. Also, I developed the social media platforms for Jamal's lab, posting content about who is working in the lab but also some key concepts related to the research her lab conducts.
In Fall 2024 I completed another independent study with Dr. Mansour and Dr. Jennifer Williams, also from the psychology department, that is related mostly to the dissemination of information and psychological concepts. This included creating the hand-out for the psychology department's Fall 2024 events, a poster and social media content for Meet the Profs, and activities for Open House Fall 2024.
My three takeaways:
- Research is important, and reading and understanding articles related to the field is crucial as they will create a space for discussion.
- Social media is a very powerful tool, and I encourage professors, researchers, labs, etc., to take a look into what social media can do for your research.
- Building relationships with professors and taking the chance at integrated learning can lead to many more opportunities.
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?
My most memorable ULethbridge experience has been helping at New Student Orientation and specifically meeting incoming psychology students. Their motivation and genuine interest were very refreshing.
How have your professors impacted your education?
My professors have been really amazing here at ULethbridge. They have exposed me to concepts and topics I'll hold forever. Specifically, Dr. Mansour's courses have only furthered my interest in forensic psychology. Dr. Williams' abnormal psychology course definitely opened my eyes to how psychological disorders may look and what people are truly experiencing. Those two have not only provided me with knowledge but have given me many opportunities to express my creativity.
Val has got a great work ethic and a great attitude. We are continually impressed by the quality of the work she does and her tendency to go the extra mile to elevate her contributions to the lab and department. – Drs. Jamal K. Mansour & Jennifer Williams, Department of Psychology
Is there anyone else who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?
My professors, friends, and family have all been amazing throughout my ULethbridge experience. They have provided immense support, and I couldn't do it without them.
Have you received any scholarships and awards?
The William S. and Helen Kizema Memorial Scholarship was the most notable scholarship I received. This scholarship helped me mostly in my first year of studies but gave me a foundation of financial support, alleviating some tuition-related stress. To the donors, thank you!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to read, eat delicious food, watch movies and documentaries, spend time with friends and family, and listen to music.
What are your hopes/plans for the future?
I plan to obtain my master's and eventually become a Registered Psychologist. I hope to have a very rewarding career as I see myself helping the community and people in general. Also, I hope to have the opportunity to travel to many places around the world.
What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
Try to be as organized as you can from the get-go! Making assignment trackers helps me a lot in terms of organizing assignments and due dates. Reach out to your professors for opportunities! If you have an interest in a field or research topic, don't be afraid to make those connections with professors; you never know what that can lead to.
Is there anything else you want to share with us about your decision to pursue a university degree?
I love learning, so pursuing a university degree has always been my plan, and I am very fortunate enough to have that opportunity. My parents and sister have been my biggest motivation and inspiration for continuing my studies, as they are the hardest-working people I know. My post-secondary education experience has not been exactly a breeze with balancing work, school, and self-care, but I am very blessed with my support system.

About Shining Students
Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.
Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Valerie!
