Liz Radke knew she wanted to be a teacher long before the start of her University of Lethbridge journey. The oldest of six children, Liz vividly recalls gathering all her siblings in her room on Saturdays to teach them 'school' with complete lessons, activities and report cards. Today, Liz brings that same enthusiasm for teaching to the classroom, where her love for education remains unwavering.

Being a lifelong learner has always been a passion of mine, and I love that teaching allows me to grow and become a better version of myself every day. I feel most fulfilled when I'm in the classroom, guiding and supporting others in their learning. I have a deep love for problem-solving and finding creative ways to connect with students, especially those who may face challenges in school.

"Liz is industrious, meticulous, conscientious and caring," says Dr. Chris Mattatall, associate professor in the Faculty of Education. "She fully embraces every aspect of the moment, and her in-class work clearly reflects her desire to shape her learning to better enable her to meet the needs of her students. Liz loves teaching and it shows."

Why did you choose to pursue Education at the University of Lethbridge?

I love learning and growing up in Lethbridge, I had heard that ULethbridge had a great Education program. I loved that the program has three professional semesters, giving me more time to learn in actual classrooms.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I've been fortunate to have had many inspiring teachers throughout my life; teaching runs in my family. I grew up with my dad and grandpa as educators, spending many hours in the school environment with them. Now, both my mom and husband are also teachers, creating a shared bond and a deep understanding of the joys and challenges of this profession. It's a family tradition that I’m proud to be a part of and it’s a connection that inspires me every day.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

Meeting my husband in our first year! We met in a chemistry lab and the rest is history!

Tell us about any learning experiences out in the field and how they have impacted your education.

I have absolutely loved each of my practicum experiences. The Faculty of Education staff, Jaime Iwaasa, Suzanne Atkinson and Kyra Svrcek were so wonderful at making placements and helping me to get into the classes/practicums I've needed. They were so helpful and kind, and I am so grateful for them.

How have your professors or instructors impacted your education? Are there any faculty members who have made a big impact on your time at ULethbridge?

The professors and instructors in the Faculty of Education are truly amazing. Every single one of them has impacted me positively and helped me along the way. I am especially grateful for all that I have learned from Dr. Chris Mattatall, Dr. Robin Bright, Dr. Sandy Bakos and my wonderful PSII University Consultant, and former high school music teacher, Dave Mik.

What piece of advice would you give to future Faculty of Education students?

Focus on being the best you can be and go out of your way to build relationships with the faculty and staff. They are awesome and have so much knowledge about the profession.
