Divya Pateliya is laying the foundation for a future at the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship. At the University of Lethbridge, he has merged his interests in computer science and business as he pursues a combined degrees program. From late-night study sessions in the library to leading impactful projects through co-op, Divya is seizing every opportunity to experience learning at ULethbridge and to achieve his goal of business ownership.

My hopes for the future involve pursuing business in the tech industry. One of the main reasons I study computer science and business is because I aspire to eventually start my own tech company or explore business ventures through technology. Studying computer science and participating in co-op work terms allows me to gain practical work experience and deepen my understanding of the fields of computer science and business, bringing me one step closer to achieving that goal.

Meet Divya | Trailblazer. Optimist. Ambitious.

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

I chose the University of Lethbridge to experience a breath of fresh air and challenge myself in a new environment. I was drawn to the university's strong emphasis on student support, smaller class sizes, and the flexibility to explore interdisciplinary studies like computer science and business management. Moving to a new city where I didn't know anyone was an exciting opportunity to grow personally and academically.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

Originally, I was admitted to the University of Lethbridge through the computer science program within the Dhillon School of Business. By the end of my first semester, I wanted to learn more about computer science and business management. This led me to apply for a combined degrees program, allowing me to pursue two majors. As I continued my education, my academic plan evolved again, adding a minor in mathematics and pursuing co-operative education opportunities. The moral of the story is that plans always change, and it's best to embrace your interests and see where they lead you.

Please tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning at ULethbridge.

I am heavily involved in the co-op program at the University of Lethbridge and have completed an 8-month internship at a software consulting company called Arcurve Inc., where I worked on various client-facing projects as a Software Developer Intern. After finishing my internship, I started working as a Co-op Ambassador in the Career Bridge office at the University of Lethbridge; promoting the program to students.

My three biggest takeaways from my co-op experience are:

  1. Learning how to network and build professional relationships in a work environment.
  2. Developing my coding skills and understanding how to code professionally, including writing maintainable and efficient code.
  3. Understanding the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance while managing tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

My most memorable ULethbridge experience so far has to be the late-night study sessions my friends and I would have right before major exams. We’d camp out in the library, order pizza, and sometimes stay on campus past midnight. Those long nights were stressful but also filled with laughter, making them some of my favourite memories from university life.

Is there anyone who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

Some of the biggest influences on my ULethbridge experience have been from the Career Bridge office. Sheridan Rae Macaulay and Mikayla Sawatzky have been incredibly supportive of my endeavours and have guided me throughout my journey, helping me navigate through my co-op work term with Arcurve and, recently, with my Co-op Ambassador role. Their encouragement has had a huge impact on my development.

Divya has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to both his academic and professional development. His ability to integrate classroom knowledge with practical experience during his co-op term at Arcurve set him apart as a standout student. Now, as a Co-op Ambassador, he’s taking his leadership to new heights by leading initiatives that strengthen relationships with employers in the industry. His ideas and approach have already made a lasting impact in a short time, not only on the program but also for future work-integrated learning students and industry partners alike. — Sheridan Macaulay, NCEWIL Instructor, Career Bridge

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I help my family with our family business, mainly focusing on the tech side. I really enjoy it because it’s a fun way to integrate business and technology, allowing me to apply what I’m learning in a practical way. Besides that, all of my hobbies revolve around creating things from scratch. I love building Gundam Model Kits, and in my personal time, I enjoy developing full-scale applications. Recently, I’ve been leading a team to make a website for a Spa, which has been an exciting project.

What are three awesome things about you?

I love making Gundam model kits. I have a passion for making coding projects. I love kayaking.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

My hopes for the future involve pursuing business in the tech industry. One of the main reasons I study computer science and business is because I aspire to eventually start my own tech company or explore business ventures through technology. Studying computer science and participating in co-op work terms allows me to gain practical work experience and deepen my understanding of the fields of computer science and business, bringing me one step closer to achieving that goal.

What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Embrace change and pursue your passions. When I first started at ULethbridge, I had no idea I would eventually take on another major and participate in co-op. For computer science students specifically, I know the job market can seem tough, but don't give up! Apply for those co-ops and internships — even if you feel unprepared. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and every opportunity can be a learning experience.

About Shining Students

Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.

Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Divya!
