Ruby Kwong, a Dhillon School of Business student majoring in human resource management and labour relations has reached a significant milestone in her academic and professional journey. The Calgary campus student was the proud recipient of the 2023 Eldon Emerson Scholarship, awarded by CPHR Alberta.

This scholarship recognizes emerging HR professionals who show exceptional community engagement, dedication to the HR discipline and a keen interest in pursuing the CPHR designation.


"Receiving the Eldon Emerson Scholarship is an incredible honour and a significant milestone in my journey," Ruby shared. "Eldon Emerson's legacy of exceptional leadership serves as a profound inspiration for me. This scholarship motivates me to follow in his footsteps by continuously striving for improvement, innovation and dedication to the HR profession."

The scholarship also boosts her confidence as she pursues the CPHR designation, with a focus on training, development and labor and employment law.

"With this recognition, I am empowered to contribute meaningfully to the HR community in Alberta, fostering progressive HR practices that enhance organizational success and employee well-being," Ruby added.

Ruby's path has not been without challenges. As an international student, she faced the daunting task of adapting to a new cultural and academic environment.

"This experience taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and cross-cultural communication, which are essential in HR. Overcoming these obstacles while maintaining a high GPA and achieving numerous academic awards has reinforced my commitment to excellence and prepared me to handle diverse HR challenges effectively." Ruby recalled.

When asked what advice she would give to fellow students pursuing a career in HR, Ruby emphasized the importance of embracing challenges and remaining committed to continuous learning.

"Building a strong foundation in HR requires not only academic excellence but also practical experience and a genuine passion for people management," she advised. "Engage actively in networking events, seek mentorship and never hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. Persistence, coupled with a proactive approach to learning and professional development, will pave the way for success in the dynamic field of HR."
