Joyce Vayalumkal (MHSM '23) credits the Dhillon School of Business' and Faculty of Health Sciences' Master of Health Services Management program with shaping how she approaches her new role as a clinical manager at Lead Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting children’s development in partnership with families and the community.
While studying at the University of Lethbridge’s Calgary campus, Vayalumkal skillfully balanced the demands of work and family, gaining a valuable new skill set and a clear sense of direction for her career.
"With each semester, my confidence in my abilities grew," Vayalumkal shares. "The research I conducted for my capstone project deeply influenced me, and I am determined to pursue opportunities to implement my ideas for school-based mental health services for Indigenous youth."
Here, Vayalumkal reflects on her journey and the impact of the program.
Why did you choose the Health Services Management program?
I liked that it was an executive program, so that I could still work while enrolled in the program. I liked the hybrid version of teaching and that the in-person component was in Calgary, where I reside.
What was your most memorable experience within the program?
My most memorable experiences came from our in-person classes, getting to know our small cohort and professors. Our little WhatsApp group is still active and I am interested in following my peers' careers post-graduation.
How did your professors impact your education?
My change management and conflict negotiation professors had a lasting impact on how I approach my new role as a clinical manager. I really enjoyed the world health systems course. It helped me think more critically about our current health system and understand the benefits and issues that arise with other health systems.
What accomplishments are you most proud of in your professional journey?
I was able to accomplish my professional goals of successfully completing this program and subsequently accepting a leadership position in my chosen field.
However, my professional journey will always intersect with other parts of my life. I take great pride in successfully balancing my work, academic pursuits, and the demands of a busy family with three young children. My commitment and dedication are reflected in my academic achievements, which have also inspired my husband and children. Navigating this professional journey requires a careful balance, ensuring that my loved ones understand the significance of my work while consistently making them feel valued and cherished. I am most proud that I was able to do this.
What skills or lessons learned at ULethbridge have proven to be the most valuable in your career?
One of the most valuable skills I developed was leadership. This experience has enabled me to cultivate a cohesive team that aligns with my vision and objectives. Strong leadership skills empower me to drive meaningful change, foster a culture of continuous improvement and effectively manage my programs to achieve our shared goals.
What advice would you give current students or recent graduates entering the business world?
I would recommend seeking out a mentor who can provide guidance and inspiration. Additionally, I encourage you to engage with a diverse range of individuals in your field. Listening to different perspectives, particularly those that challenge your own, is essential for your personal and professional growth.
