Each year, the Faculties of Education, Arts & Science, Fine Arts, Health Sciences and the Dhillon School of Business award a gold medal to the most distinguished graduate for the academic year at the undergraduate level. This year's Gold Medal winner for the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge is Devin Law (BMus/BEd '25).
Alongside his academic achievements, Devin’s ULethbridge journey has been defined by a deep commitment to the arts and to building community through music. With a focus on vocal performance and music education, he has shared his talents in live ensembles with the U of L Singers, Wind Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. For the past three years, Devin has also volunteered as the director of a community choir for adults, bringing his passion for music into the local community. During his final student teaching internship, he composed a musical theatre production for his students—an experience that will culminate in a full performance next year. Through every note and every connection, Devin has used music as a bridge to inspire, uplift and educate.

At the heart of all the best pursuits are people and opportunities to form positive, lasting connections.
What does this academic recognition mean to you?
As an education student, I felt that my primary responsibility was to be out in the community. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes as an educator and isn't visible in the university classroom. Thus, I feel that much of the work I invested in the communities I worked with was never recognized or acknowledged in my academic spheres. Not that the work was ever done to gain recognition, but rather for the sake of connection. However, the rewards of working with the communities shone through in how they helped me mature and develop as an educator. I feel that this award is a personal memento that reminds me of the hundreds, even thousands, of unseen hours invested into quieter spaces, outside the limelight.
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?
My most memorable ULethbridge experiences were participating in the music ensemble activities, including jazz, choir and collaborative ensemble, as well as participating in the rock climbing activities and competitions on campus.

Is there someone specific who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?
There are four people who had a very significant impact on my journey as a student. The first two were my professors, Dr. Bradley Parker and Dr. Deanna Oye. These two professors went above and beyond to invest themselves in my musical journey. They were constant and consistent resources and supporters. The third is ULethbridge Alumni, and Lethbridge area band instructor, Ken Rogers. Without him, my love for theatre and subsequent theatrical resume would be very nearly nonexistent. Fourth is Lori Garner, a teacher associate out in Raymond, and the director of the Raymond Playhouse Society. Working with her on the board of directors for the Raymond Playhouse Society, and watching how she directs, taught me more about leadership and directing in two years than I could have learned in 10 through schooling.
What advice would you give to those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
Take care of your body, it is the vehicle for your mind. This means finding both physical and social outlets to stay connected to the world around you. Join a club. Take up a hobby. Find like-minded people. Whoever you are, there are others out there who will help you become more alive, and you can help them in the same way.
What are your hopes/plans for the future?
I hope to find a place where I can establish and participate in education and music that is meaningful, high-quality, healing and connecting for those I work with and under. I hope to find a place to teach where I can benefit my students and offer something unique and valuable to a community.
