Cybil Cheung (BA/BEd '18), SEARS National Recruitment Officer
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Calgary. I moved to Lethbridge right after high school to start my Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree, majoring in kinesiology. During my time as a student, I had many opportunities to be involved with student life. As Resident Assistant (RA), I was able to fully embrace the campus community, meet some amazing people, and make lifelong friends - ULethbridge quickly became my home away from home.
I have encountered many memorable experiences at ULethbridge, and as an alumni, I am always eager to help and share experiences with our incoming students!
How long have been at ULethbridge and what do you do here?
I taught at an elementary school for about a year after I graduated and I then found out about this unique position as a Recruitment Officer here at the University of Lethbridge. As a recruiter, my job is to help high school, transfer and adult students transition and enrol into their desired program. I meet with students all over Canada via high school visits and virtual appointments. As the assigned recruiter for the virtual territory, a lot of my job consists of new online initiatives to improve student enrolment and retention, including virtual tours, online appointments and designing virtual events.
What's the best part of your job?
I don't know if I could choose just ONE thing that I love the most about my job but if I had to, I would say the best part of my job is the reward of being able to help students and families, easing the anxieties and worries that students have when taking their next big step in post-secondary. Coming in a close second would be the travelling aspect of recruiting. I get to visit different parts of Western Canada and meet colleagues from other post-secondary institutions. A lot of learning and connections are made when I am on the road!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
In my spare time, I enjoy being out and about going to city events, shopping, camping, cooking, and creating DIY projects. I'm always keen to try new things and experiment with new ideas!
