Q&A with Shining Graduate David Awosoga

Put in the work and express gratitude as much as possible, even when it isn't convenient or when you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Perspective and effort will never go to waste.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in applied statistics, David Awosoga (BSc '22) is off to the University of Waterloo to pursue a master's degree in data science in the Fall. We have no doubt that David's competitive spirit, love of working with numbers and learning how to apply data in the real world will propel him to his chosen career in performance and analytics in the sports industry.

Please tell us a bit about your experiential or work-integrated learning. What were your three biggest takeaways from participating?

I have completed two NSERC summer terms and two independent studies in computer science with Dr. Shahadat Hossain, creating algorithms to explore the compact representation of large network data based on sparse matrix data structures.

My biggest takeaways from this experience are:

  1. The ability to self-learn and strong writing skills are important regardless of the academic discipline.
  2. Conferences are really cool! Presentations can feel daunting at first but the experience is well worth it.
  3. Research is a great opportunity to extend what you've learned in the classroom to areas that you would never see otherwise.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

My most memorable ULethbridge experience has definitely been my time as a varsity athlete on the track and field team. From interacting with my teammates, getting up to (mostly tame) shenanigans, and all of the laughs and serious conversations alike, this experience made my ULethbridge experience particularly enjoyable.

Is there someone specific who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

I thank God for all of the amazing people I have crossed paths with during my time at ULethbridge. The two that have had the most important influence on my experience have been my research supervisor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, and my track and field coach Larry Steinke.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

I will begin graduate studies at the University of Waterloo, pursuing a Master's Degree in Data Science. Upon completion, I hope to work in performance evaluation and analytics in the sports industry.

What advice would you give to those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Put in the work and express gratitude as much as possible, even when it isn't convenient or when you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Perspective and effort will never go to waste.
