Tyler Hayward, Interim Manager, Printing Services
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in Lethbridge and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1984. I worked for a few years before being hired by Rick Casson as an apprentice printer in April 1986. I married my wife, Shauna, in July 1990. We have two kids — our son Cooper (Justine) is a 2021 ULethbridge graduate in Environmental Science and our daughter Taren (Tanner) is a 2020 graduate in civil engineering from California State University Northridge.
How long have you been at ULethbridge and what do you do here?
I will be 38 years into my career at ULethbridge on April 1, 2024…. yikes that’s a long time!
April 1986 – August 1990 — I did a four-year apprenticeship while working in Printing Services, graduating from the Westerra Institute of Technology (NAIT) as a Journeyman Pressman.
1990 – 1997 — Journeyman pressman, bindery operator and photo darkroom operator. This was before digital photography and we photographed everything with film and had to develop and print photographs for the campus publications.
1997 – 2020 — I worked as the Printing Services Production Supervisor under Manager Greg Martin.
August 2020 – current — Interim Manager Printing Services. I took over from Greg Martin as COVID hit ULethbridge. We managed to stay on campus and continue working through those trying times.
What's the best part of your job?
I still enjoy getting back in the print shop and working on our early 1950’s Heidelberg Letterpress. I enjoy the fast pace of the campus and all the people I have met and worked with over the years.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have been very involved in Lethbridge’s vibrant running community for 30+ years running marathons, ultramarathons and other distances (before double hip replacement surgery). I volunteer on the Lethbridge Moonlight Run race committee as well as the Lost Soul Ultramarathon. I coached kids lacrosse for seven years and was a goalie on the ULethbridge faculty/staff rec hockey team for 20+ years until sore hips forced me into beer league retirement. Shauna and I enjoy supporting Pronghorn Athletics and getting out to as many games as possible.
