Shining Student Mollie Riley

Although Mollie Riley came to ULethbridge to study education, she soon fell in love with history and decided to pursue that entirely. She is thankful that she did as she is truly passionate about history and plans to continue her education in that field.

Relax and allow yourself to enjoy the moment. My time here at ULethbridge has flown by. Looking back, I wish I had spent more time enjoying my present moment rather than constantly worrying about what's to come. Learn to strike a balance between planning for your future and living in the moment.

Please tell us about your work-integrated learning experiences at ULethbridge?

I have completed an independent study and am currently completing an honours thesis at the University of Lethbridge. These experiential learning opportunities have expanded my research ability, knowledge and confidence as an aspiring scholar. They have afforded me an opportunity to work independently and one-on-one with my supervisor, Dr. Carol Williams. I feel confident moving into graduate school, having completed independent research in my undergraduate degree.

What has been your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

My most memorable experience has been cultivating new friendships and having the opportunity to learn from others. I am inspired by other people's skills, talents and passions.

What is the most important lesson you have learned so far at ULethbridge?

The most important lesson I have learned is that I am capable of reaching academic success. I have learned to trust in my ability, lead with confidence, and try new things.

Is there someone specific who has had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

I completed my independent study, honours thesis, and numerous classes under the direct supervision of Dr. Carol Williams. Dr. Williams has been the single most influential support in my academic career. She has inspired me, encouraged me and supported me in delving deeper into my scholarly ambitions. Her insight, criticism and experience have pushed me to grow my academic skills. Her unwavering support and belief in me as a student have inspired me to pursue a career in academia. I do not think I would have had the confidence to pursue a degree in history had she not been there to support me, and for that, I will always be immensely grateful.

Is there anything you wish you knew in your first semester that you know now?

What advice would you give to those about to begin their ULethbridge journey?

You will fail, and that's completely okay. Failure provides us with a tremendous opportunity to grow and expand our learning. I believe that success is made through failing, learning from our mistakes, and trying again. Allow yourself to risk failure—it is a healthy part of the road to success.
