Her time at ULethbridge has been filled with challenges, discoveries, and moments that have shaped her academic journey and future aspirations. From late-night study sessions to hands-on lab work, she’s embraced it all with curiosity and determination.
Your potential is no less than anyone else, but sometimes, the biggest obstacle is overcoming inner fears.
Meet Sigang | Resilient. Reflective. Curious.
Program: Bachelor of Science | Major: Biochemistry
Why did you choose ULethbridge?
My sister graduated from here eight years ago. As a teenager at that time, I was inspired by her stories and dreamed of experiencing the study abroad life she described. Later, when I was choosing a university during the pandemic, almost all language tests in China were canceled, and it was almost impossible to apply to a Canadian university without a language grade. Fortunately, the EAP online course then made it possible for me to study at ULethbridge officially.
Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?
I was not really sure what to study at that time. But I have always been interested in science in high school, especially biology and chemistry. As a result, I ended up choosing biochemistry as my major. It turned out to be more challenging than I initially expected, but I’ve enjoyed the process and the challenges along the way. Also, I became more interested in doing experiments. I hope to do laboratory-related work in the future.
What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?
One of my most memorable experiences was spending a night at the library with friends, and we wrote a paper on why the world needs chocolate.
How have your professors impacted your education?
All the teachers and professors I've met have been knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. They love their jobs whether it's in research or teaching. Some, like Wayne Lippa, made efforts to connect with students as well as deliver a better teaching and learning experience, he memorized every student's name within the first few classes and his teaching created a passion for chemistry in me. Some, such as Dr. Vineet Rathod, whose passion and dedication to research have not only deepened my understanding but also encouraged me to stay curious and engaged in my major.
Is there anyone else who had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?
The International Center has been supportive, not only with academics but also in helping me in daily life. Additionally, my best friend is full of energy, and spending time with her always brings me joy.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I have enjoyed knitting and baking recently. These activities require only a bit of focus and patience, and the repetitive rhythm can help me to relax my brain especially when I am in anxious mode.
What are your hopes/plans for the future?
I am hoping to find a lab-related job, and I also have plans to enter graduate school to do further research in my area of interest.
What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?
Choosing a major is an important decision, as it’s something you’ll work with for four or more years. Don’t let the fear of not doing something perfectly stop you from trying. Starting is always better than doing nothing at all. I hope everyone enjoys and embraces the university journey.
About Shining Students
Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.
Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Singang!
