Shining Student Scott Tersteeg

Scott Tersteeg (BSc '22) is a dedicated biochemistry graduate student whose journey at ULethbridge began with a passion for research. Now pursuing his Master of Science, Scott focuses on RNA viruses like Dengue and West Nile, studying their replication processes to identify potential drug targets. With a commitment to both science and education, he thrives on uncovering the mysteries of RNA and inspiring others to explore the fascinating world of biochemistry.

I would advise anyone new to ask as many questions as they can. Everyone at ULethbridge willing to help out!

Meet Scott | Scientist, easy-going, committed.
Degree: Doctor of Science | Major: Biomolecular Science

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

I chose the University of Lethbridge because of the opportunity of getting involved in research as an undergraduate. I have continued my graduate studies here because I was fortunate enough to be involved in research that I enjoyed as an undergraduate and wanted to continue that research.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge? Has your academic plan changed since you began your studies?

I knew I wanted to be in the scientific field but after opportunities provided at the University of Lethbridge such as teaching assignment for graduate students, it has focused me on helping other students learn more about biochemistry and science in general.

What is your research based on? What unique opportunities do you get by taking part in this research? What are your biggest takeaways from being involved in this research?

My research focuses on RNA viruses such as Dengue and West Nile Viruses. I study their replication process within cells and use my findings to identify potential drug targets. I get to be part of the emerging RNA field, attend interesting RNA conferences, and see cutting-edge research being done all over the world. My biggest takeaway is that there is always something more to uncover in how organisms use RNA to regulate themselves.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience?

My most memorable moment at the University of Lethbridge thus far has been presenting my work to our department at the 17th Chinook Symposium with an oral presentation.

How have your professors impacted your education? Have any professors changed how you view the world or what you want to study?

The University of Lethbridge has a fantastic RNA research program, and after learning about RNA more in-depth in a Biochemistry class, I realized that is what I wanted to study.

"Scott is a very enthusiastic researcher, who is also always willing to help everyone else in the lab." - Dr. Trushar Patel, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

I hope to transfer some of the skills I've learned in my research to find an industry job.

About Shining Students

Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.

Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Scott!
