Shining Student Neal Smith, English major

By embracing the English program at the University of Lethbridge, Neal Smith found his true academic home, guided by professors who encouraged him in writing and storytelling. Participating in the Storytellers-at-Large program proved to be a transformative experience, solidifying his path as a storyteller. Neal's dedication to literature and writing extends beyond the classroom, with fiction and poetry enriching both his academic and creative pursuits.

I participated in the Storytellers-at-Large applied study program, practicing the art of oral storytelling for children Pre-K through Grade 6. I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would, and it has convinced me that my future is indeed in writing and telling stories.

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

ULethbridge is a good-sized university for me. Big enough to have the resources I need, small enough to know the professors and students.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

I started on a degree in pre-veterinary biology but found that was not where my skills lay. I tried philosophy, enjoyed that, and then went into social work briefly before taking a hiatus for mental health. My return to university, 10 years later, focusing on English, is where I am happiest.

Please tell us a bit about your experiential or work-integrated learning.

I participated in the Storytellers-at-Large applied study program, practicing the art of oral storytelling for children Pre-K through Grade 6. I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would, and it has convinced me that my future is indeed in writing and telling stories. I learned tricks of memorization and improvisation. I gained an increased appreciation for folk tales from around the world, as I hope the children did, too.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

By far, participating in the Storytellers-at-Large program was one of the most fun experiences I've had, and it fully confirmed the path I am on.

How have your professors impacted your education?

David Kootnikoff and Jay Gamble from the Department of English host a literature open mic and are in the process of creating a creative writing program. They have both encouraged me and others to pursue our passions in writing.

Neal is a wonderfully articulate and thoughtful student of literary theory and criticism, and an emerging poet of impressive ability. – Dr. Adam Carter, Department of English

Are you participating in any extracurricular activities?

I write fiction and poetry, and share it in writing groups and perform at venues such as the Department of English Open Mic and the Owl Poetry Night. These pieces are informed by coursework and, likewise, through the practice of writing, improve my understanding of literature for class.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I like writing, reading and video games to unwind, as well as nature walks in beautiful southern Alberta.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

The plan is to look into a master's or finishing my social work degree while I write and establish myself as an author.

What advice would you like to give those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Don't be afraid to change your mind. What you start with does not have to dictate where you finish. Pushing yourself down the wrong path will only leave you frustrated. Likewise, don't be afraid to take a break. Looking after yourself is what will get you through.
