Shining Student Janelle Waugh

From discovering her passion for anthropology to engaging in community research through the Community Bridge Lab, Janelle Waugh has embraced every opportunity to learn, connect, and make a meaningful impact. Her time at ULethbridge has been about more than academics — it’s been about finding her voice and building a future rooted in curiosity and collaboration.

Hands down, my most memorable experience at ULethbridge has been being a Community Bridge Lab fellow. Actually, I'm a two-times fellow, but who's counting? During my time with the lab, I made some truly amazing connections, met amazing people, attended informative workshops, ran workshops, and repeatedly conquered my fear of public presentations.

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

Lethbridge has always felt like home, which makes sense, considering I spent every second weekend here growing up. When it came time to apply and ultimately choose a post-secondary institution, the University of Lethbridge just felt like the natural option.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

Initially, I wanted to be a social studies teacher, but after taking my first anthropology class, I started to wonder what my other options might be. Fast forward to now, having dropped out of the education program to fully pursue anthropology, there are so many options it's hard to choose.

Please tell us about your experiential or work-integrated learning at ULethbridge.

Both my applied study and Independent study have been related to my ongoing work and research with CIFRS (The Canadian Institute for Far Right Studies). Recently we've been researching how misinformation affects 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in rural Canadian spaces.

My three biggest takeaways:

  1. Your independent/applied study should cater to both your academic and personal needs, so don't be afraid to make changes and advocate for yourself.
  2. Every opportunity is a networking opportunity, so if there is a cool professor that you want to learn more from, consider asking them to supervise an independent study.
  3. These are the types of experiences you go to University for; this is ultimately what you are/what you should be paying for. So use these opportunities while you have access to them. They look great on your CV, and they teach you applicable skills.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

Hands down, my most memorable experience at ULethbridge has been being a Community Bridge Lab fellow. Actually, I'm a two-times fellow, but who's counting? How have your professors impacted your education?

It should almost go without saying that I owe a lot to all of the amazing professors I've had over the years. Their dedication, patience, and unwavering support have allowed me to flourish as both a person and an academic. I've been able to achieve things I've never thought possible, all because I've had some pretty amazing people in my corner.

Professors who are willing to advocate for their students deserve way more credit than they ever receive, but I hope they know just how much we appreciate everything they do.

Janelle Waugh has an indomitable spirit. She is willing to ask uncomfortable questions to get to the bottom of things. Yet, she is generous with her time in supporting collaborative community research on issues of critical concern as well as the success of other students. – Dr. Jan Newberry, Department of Anthropology

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

Currently, the plan is to continue my education in one way or another, whether through travel, the pursuit of a master's, or by continuing to work as a research assistant. No matter where I end up, I know that the skills and experiences I've gained during my time at the University of Lethbridge will help me navigate and make the best of any situation.

What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Don't compare yourself to anyone or anything. Do things at your own pace, and do what works best for you. If you need to take less than five classes a semester, then do it; having time to do what you want to do is important, so make sure you maintain that balance.

About Shining Students

Shining Students engage inside and outside of the classroom. What makes a student shine may differ from person to person, but they all share a passion for learning. They may be top students, involved in an innovative project, participating in ground-breaking research, playing Pronghorn athletics, fighting for social issues or all of the above! When students find something they enjoy and combine it with what they are good at, they shine.

Each year, the Faculty of Arts & Science's faculty and staff nominate students who exemplify the ULethbridge student spirit. Congratulations Janelle!
