Why did you choose ULethbridge?

I chose ULethbridge for its excellent education program, as it is the only university in Alberta which provides students with three full-practicum semesters and lots of hands-on experiences. The new Science Commons also caught my attention. As someone who is passionate about science and seeking to understand more, I was excited to get to attend a university with state-of-the-art laboratories.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

I have always known I wanted to take up science education! Being in university and getting involved in summer studies, such as working in the University Herbarium, has opened my mind to the number of job opportunities education can provide for you.

Please tell us a bit about your experiential or work-integrated learning. What were your three biggest takeaways from participating?

My work-integrated learning experience was truly one of the best things that has ever come my way. My biggest takeaways were:

1. That there is so much out there to be learned
2. The best way to learn something is to get involved
3. The relationships you build and the people you meet along the way are some of the most important aspects.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

My most memorable experience at ULethbridge so far is getting to work for Jennifer Burke and John Bain at the University of Lethbridge Herbarium and Teaching Herbarium. The amazing people I have met and the knowledge I have gained from this experience is priceless, and I will forever be grateful.

How have your professors impacted your education?

I have had truly amazing professors. At ULethbridge, the professors genuinely care about their students and their success. I have had a few professors who have impacted my life and made me realize that there are so many opportunities out there. They encourage curiosity and welcome questions, making me feel like university is the right place for me.

Is there anyone else who has had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

Aside from my amazing professors, I have made many friends along the way who have made my university experience that much more enjoyable. That includes my summer research partner, who is one of the kindest and most intelligent people I know.

Have you received any scholarships and awards?

This past summer, I was lucky enough to receive the Chinook Summer Research Award to do summer research and help assemble a plant biodiversity database for southern Alberta. This has opened my mind to the amazing world of plants and how truly important they are. This has done so much for my educational career and has provided me with knowledge that I might not have received without this opportunity.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I like to hike. With beautiful mountain ranges close by, it is one of my favourite activities.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

My hope for the future is to become a science educator and inspire kids to seek and learn more, the way my professors and teachers have inspired me.

What advice would you like to give those about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

One piece of advice I have for new students is not to get discouraged. University may seem daunting, and you may even question your choices, but keep trying your best, and you will eventually get there, one step at a time.
