Shining Health Sciences student CJ Johnson
The Bachelor of Health Sciences post-diploma program has given CJ a new perspective on what it means to be healthy.
My most cherished experience at ULethbridge spans my public health education. Exploring the social determinants of health with the extraordinary Calgary cohort provided me with a new perspective on what it truly means to be 'healthy' and the unique aspects of our identities that grant us privilege. This program has provided me with a new lens of seeing the world and enriched my goal of empathetic and non-judgmental understanding of people and their well-being pursuits.
Meet CJ | Compassionate. Empathetic. Curious.
Program — Post-diploma Bachelor of Health Sciences (Calgary Campus)
Why did you choose ULethbridge?
I chose ULethbridge for several reasons, including the positive reviews from many of my peers. ULethbridge is Alberta's only educational institution that offers a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. ULethbridge offers post-diploma degrees, which allowed me to pursue undergraduate studies after completing a diploma in practical nursing. I knew my previous educational experience would be valued, allowing me to connect with others with previous education to enhance my experience while pursuing my degree.
Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?
Absolutely — I knew I wanted to learn more about the broader societal influences on health after my nursing experience. While my previous education focused on treating illness, I was interested in preventing illness and how we, as healthcare providers and communities, can promote and protect health.
How have your professors impacted your education?
All my professors have played a profound role in shaping my education and personal growth. Not only did they emphasize excellence in academics but also in being a compassionate human being. Dr. Silvia Koso, in particular, stands out. Her teachings inspired me to advocate for community and connection within my public health pursuits and personal life. She imparted the powerful lesson that deep empathy is a superpower, serving as a catalyst for real-world change. Another professor who greatly impacted my educational experience is Heather Cobb. Her classroom was an uplifting and inspiring place full of meaningful discussions and advocacy. Her emphasis on health equity for those who are neurodiverse and 2SLGBTQA+ made her classroom feel inclusive and struck a chord in my heart as a member of these communities. Heather and many other professors made sure to create an inclusive and safe space in their classrooms, enhancing students' authenticity. Lastly, I wanted to mention Professor Adam Betzelt, whose positivity reached through the screens of his online classroom and left students feeling inspired to learn more. His kindness and eagerness to teach made his classes incredibly enjoyable.
In your free time, what do you like to do?
During my free time, I find joy in playing hockey, loving my three cats, and continuously learning. Volunteering with Common Horizon, a climate and social justice group, has become a newfound passion, allowing me to contribute to causes close to my heart.
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a graduate program focusing on enhancing community-based mental health programs for marginalized groups. This involves deepening my understanding of the social determinants of health and devising innovative strategies to break down barriers hindering access to essential healthcare services.
My goal is to make a meaningful impact within the realm of mental health, whether by advocating for more equitable programs or directly assisting those in need.
What advice would you like to give those about beginning their journey at ULethbridge?
For those embarking on their ULethbridge journey, my advice is to approach it with an eager and open mind. There's a vast wealth of knowledge and understanding, and passion can be found in unexpected places. Connect with your peers and professors; these relationships will enrich your academic and personal experience.
