Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 recognizes Dhillon Alumna Angela Thompson
Every year Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 recognizes the achievements of 40 Canadians in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors who have demonstrated remarkable success before passing the age of 40. This year's 2021 honourees includes Dhillon School of Business alumna Angela Thompson (BMgt '12) who majored in General Management. Angela's incredible accomplishments include being named one of Oilweek Magazine Rising Stars, class of 2016 and one of Canada's most powerful women for the Women’s Executive Network for 2020.
These days Angela serves as Vice President, Project Services for FLINT Energy Services, A Division of Clearstream Energy Services Inc., where she oversees project delivery as it pertains to project controls, estimating, supply chain management and field administration for all ClearStream companies and business activities. Here she lets us know what being a strong leader means to her, how she continues to challenge herself professionally and personally and more.
What went through your mind when you found out you were selected as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40?
Privileged to be included in such an esteemed group of people. The class this year is one of the most diverse and inclusive groups Canada’s Top 40 under 40 has ever seen. I also felt a sense of accomplishment for the sacrifices and perseverance I have had over the last almost 20 years of my career.
What does being a strong leader and role model mean to you?
This is something that is a big part of who I am. It is important to me that my kids grow up knowing that this world is diverse and inclusive, that gender stereotypes are a concept of the past. I want to instill in my son and daughter that women can hold senior executive positions and have significant influence.
How do you challenge yourself personally and/or professionally?
Reflection is a powerful tool. I treat it as a practice in my daily life which has served me well. I think about often how I can improve or have handled situations differently. Self improvement and discovery are keys to successful, professional and fulfilled personal growth.
How did the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business prepare you for the business world?
The Dhillon School of Business was an early adopter of corporate social responsibility. The foundational education around these systemic corporate values has been intrinsic to my leadership style, growth and development. I was also a Pronghorn for five years playing on the women’s basketball program, this also had a deep-rooted impact on my growth as a leader. Leadership principles such as discipline, focus and grit were all attributes gained through my time as a student athlete.
What advice do you have for students aspiring to be leaders and wanting to create impact?
Be your authentic self, there is power in vulnerability. Leadership is a journey, there are going to be moments that test you. It is important that you always have confidence in yourself – even when it feels there is no one in your corner. To overcome, to ensure, to transform are critical in becoming an exceptional leader.
Congratulations Angela!
